Reasons Why Moms Need to Exercise
Moms are always putting everyone else first, and the Mom-guilt can run pretty hard. We’re here to let you know that it’s ok to put yourself first, not only for your health and wellbeing but for the good of your family. Hear us out! Check out these reasons why Moms need to exercise.
More patience
If you tend to hold things in and the stress levels are running high, you’re much more likely to blow up at the kids, your spouse or co-workers. Routine exercise acts as a regular outlet for all that pent-up aggression and frustration. Why not release it in an intentionally and beneficial way – like a kickboxing class or dancing it out with your favourite tunes on full blast. Less yelling is probably better for everyone and with more patience comes presence. You’ll be more equipped to be present with your kids and actually enjoy the time you spend together.
Show your kids how to care for themselves
You may have noticed that your little mini-me loves to do what you do. Kids are constantly learning and absorbing things in their environment. Why not model for your children what it means to take care of yourself and do the things that make you feel better. By taking the time to exercise, you show your kids how to be responsible for taking care of themselves and that what’s important to them really matters. When Moms take care of their own needs, they speak up for themselves, which is an invaluable trait to teach young children. You’re also showing them how to live an active lifestyle, which your family will benefit from for years to come.
Help postpartum blues
Even though not all Moms are talking about it, most of them have been there – the baby blues. It’s something to understand and learn about, rather than letting yourself feel shameful for what is out of your control. Exercise can have an antidepressant effect for women and has been shown to ease depression. Try walking outside a few times a day in 10-minute increments to get your steps in and enjoy the fresh air. Take a few deep breaths while you’re out there. You got this, Mama.
Keep up with the kids on all their adventures
Chances are you had kids because you saw yourself enjoying all the happiness they bring to your life for many years to come. As a family, you want to take pleasure in afternoons at the park, having a picnic, endless crafts, weekend ski trips, and bike rides on a Sunday afternoon. Who says your kids and spouse get to have all the fun?! If you can be more active regularly, working out on your own when you need it, you’ll be that much better equipped to keep up with everyone and have fun!
Improved sleep quality
When you hear the word Mom, you might automatically think of sleep deprivation. And chances are, you’re right! Prioritizing sleep allows you to feel better overall and bond with your kids. Moderate aerobic exercise, like a 30-minute light jog or bike ride, increases your amount of deep sleep – this is when the brain and body have a chance to rejuvenate.
If you’re not ready
If you don’t quite feel ready, especially if you’ve recently given birth, go easy on yourself before getting back to your old workout routine. If something doesn’t feel right, make an appointment with your healthcare provider to be cleared for exercise before you start pounding the pavement. You might be needing extra time to heal, so listen to what your body is trying to tell you. Don’t force yourself to do too much too soon, and please, don’t compare yourself to others. Honour your own process.
Best ways to incorporate exercise into your day
Tips for getting regular exercise, with and without the kids:
- Workout with your baby at the park. Get in those tricep dips on the park bench, or lift your little one out in front to activate your shoulders and engage your core.
- Go for a walk with a neighbouring mom. One of the best ways to get into a routine is with the accountability of a buddy. You don’t have to go it alone unless you crave that solo quiet time!
- Squeeze in some push-ups and lunges while the kids are in front of the TV.
- Turn up your favourite tunes and have a family dance party. Maybe you even put on costumes or silly hats to get the kids excited and make it more fun.
- Set a regular time in your day or week that is your time. Plan it with your spouse or child care provider, so the whole family knows this is Mom’s hour, and she is unavailable. This is a big part of you asking for what you need and making it happen.
- Make it fun and something you look forward to. You have enough stress in your life, and working out shouldn’t add to that. Choose an exercise that lights you up.
Remember, Mom, this is about you. Most of your life is about other people. To keep that connection to yourself, your body and who you are, you deserve time on your own. You and your family will be better off for it. We’re rooting for you!
