DETOX

Clean Up Your Act

These days, it’s becoming more and more common to hear people talking about following a ‘detox diet.’ However, many of these fad detox plans, such as a day of juicing, lack macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrates) and don’t have nearly enough calories. The good news is that you don’t have to drink juice all day or stop training to cleanse.

get back on track

Clean eating is synonymous with eliminating the junk from your diet and it can be as simple as omitting highly processed foods and focusing on whole foods that are rich in nutrients such as plant-based foods, grass-fed or organic meats, and basic fruits and vegetables.

To take it one step further, you can omit those foods that can cause stimulation (caffeine) or inflammation (dairy or gluten). If you’re really looking to “cleanse,” though, try cycling your whey-based protein to a plant-based powder, and remove processed sugars and refined ingredients from your diet. Swap out coffee and other stimulants for tea and set goals such as squeezing in 7–10 servings of vegetables (majority green) into each day of eating.

Beyond the foods you eat, it’s also important to remember to do the easy stuff that too often and too easily takes a back seat or gets bumped down the priority list. Any detox plan should involve getting plenty of sleep, drinking plenty of water, and being mindful of other important self-care habits. But, the secret weapons for your own detox plan should be carefully selected supplements that will help you reach your individual goals.

Detox Blueprint

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all detox plan that will work for everyone. But, there are building blocks that should form the foundation of any successful cleanse.

1. Eat

Focusing on what you put into your body is the most important part of a cleanse. Make sure you’re getting the right foods in the right ways. Intentional meal preps can help you make smart choices before you’re tempted by the bad ones and keeping yourself satisfied will help keep you from reaching for an unhealthy snack.

2. Drink

Hydration is your very best friend when doing a cleanse. Not only will keeping your cups full help keep you energized, it will also allow your natural filters (think kidneys and liver) working at the most optimal levels. We also often times mistake thirst for hunger, so always reach for a glass of water before you decide to dig into that energy bar.

3. Sleep

Our bodies use sleep as a time to repair and replenish. Kind of the whole point of a cleanse, no? Don’t limit your own cleanse by skimping on the sleep. It’s a common misconception that you can “catch up” on sleep, too. You need a full night’s rest, every night.

4. Sweat

Kick your cleanse into overdrive by working up a good, healthy sweat. Not only will vigorous exercise rev up your metabolism and help your body get back on track, it will also release endorphins so that you’ll be feeling good about yourself and your cleanse.

Soak it Up

Get CleanEpsom salt baths (aka magnesium sulphate) can be a great way to relax muscles, promote sleep, ease anxiety and improve circulation. Dissolve 2 cups of epsom salts, and 1 cup of Himalayan or sea salt into a warm/hot bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. This relaxing practice is a great way to unwind, and support your body through your cleansing program.

Keep It Up

It’s easy to think that the job is over once the “detox” is done. But, it’s much better to think of using your detox as hitting the reset switch rather than the rewind button. You don’t have to follow the whole detox plan forever, but focusing on eating right, drinking enough water, sleeping 7 to 9 hours every night, and exercising regularly will help you maintain all the improvements that you felt and saw during your cleanse for the long term.
